RTHA chooses BookBetter.travel as its booking platform to help travelers make more sustainable travel choices
Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA) and BookBetter are launching a new way to book flight tickets. From 1 July 2026, travelers will be able to use the Rotterdam The Hague Airport website not only to easily book flights to and from the airport, but also to make a more sustainable choice directly.
RTHA has great ambitions in the field of sustainability and has therefore chosen to collaborate with BookBetter, a pioneer in making the climate impact of air travel transparent.
More sustainable choices when booking
With BookBetter's technology, travelers gain insight into the expected emissions of each flight during booking. In addition, they can contribute to the use of alternative aviation fuels, also known as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
To help travelers get started, the contribution to SAF is set by default to an emission reduction of 10% of the emissions per passenger. Travelers always remain in control: during the booking process, they can easily lower, switch off, or increase this contribution, depending on their own preference.
Michelle Samson, Manager Strategy, Sustainability and Innovation at RTHA, is pleased with the collaboration. “With this step, we are making more sustainable flying a reality and accessible. By giving travelers insight into their climate impact during booking and offering them the opportunity to contribute directly to more sustainable fuel, we are putting our sustainability ambitions into practice. We hope other airports will also adopt this tool.”
“RTHA is the first airport in the world where travelers can purchase both their flight and a contribution to SAF during a single booking,” says Nicolas Guillaume, co-founder of BookBetter. “We see that many people want to travel more sustainably, but often don't know how to do so in concrete terms. By providing insight into flight emissions during the booking process and at the same time offering the option to adjust the contribution to sustainable aviation fuel themselves, we make that choice simple and transparent.”
How does it work?
The alternative aviation fuel is supplied via the Book & Claim principle, similar to the way green electricity is traded. Under this principle, the emission reduction of the sustainable fuel is allocated to the buyer, regardless of where and when the fuel is physically refueled.
This means that the SAF a traveler purchases is not necessarily used on his or her own flight, but is actually deployed in aviation, on top of what the sector is already legally required to purchase. Every contribution helps the sector increase demand for SAF.
Full transparency
After the last flight of the booking, every traveler who has purchased SAF receives a personal certificate by email containing all the details of the purchased SAF. This includes, among other things, which sustainable fuel was used, where and when the SAF was supplied, the sustainability criteria applied, and the corresponding emission reduction.
Working together towards more sustainable aviation
With this collaboration, Rotterdam The Hague Airport and BookBetter are taking a next step in making more sustainable aviation and lower dependency on fossil fuels, more accessible. RTHA is a testing ground for innovation and opens up the airport for testing new, more sustainable ideas and solutions, bringing together various innovation partners.
